Market news from the farm gate and beyond...

Sept 2007

The end of the crappy weather is in sight, market-goers, and we couldn’t be happier. While we’ve been challenged by freezing early mornings and tent-wrestling in gale force winds, we’ve also been rapt by the popularity of the market during what is traditionally a slower period.
Special thanks from all of us to our great ‘regulars’ - those market-goers who brave the beastliest weather to pick up their weekly shopping every Sunday, no matter what. Without you the Clevedon Village Farmers’ Market wouldn’t be what it is today. Roll on Summer!

Prize Pumpkins gathered at our 2007 Pumpkin Competition weigh-in.

PUMPKIN SUNDAY
We’ve got a great September lined up, with special focus on registration for our colourful Pumpkin Growing Competition (weigh-in scheduled for March 23, 2008). This year’s inaugural event attracted more entries than we could have hoped for, and a great day was had by all. We’re planning to replicate and expand on that success next year, with special treats for all our younger entrants (under 13 years); plus great prizes in the following categories:
CATEGORY ONE (young people up to 16 years old) - Heaviest Pumpkin. Prize: iPod Nano.
CATEGORY TWO (adults) - Heaviest Pumpkin. Prize: a voucher for over $200 worth of market produce (redeemable at the market).
Prizes also for the smallest mature pumpkin, tallest, ugliest, best-looking, most unusual and largest diameter pumpkins.
To enter, please pick up a seed and registration pack from the Market Espresso Stall from September 9 (packs cost $2.50 - with $1 going to the Clevedon School PTA and include three seeds).

MORE BANG FOR YOUR BUCK
Everyone knows that the quality of the food at the Clevedon Village Farmers’ Market is second to none. What you may not know is that it also represents good value for money.
Supermarkets, as we all know, have bulk buying power and use it to knock prices down as far as they can. But our stallholders sell direct to you, which cuts out the middle man.
Not only are you getting hand-made, locally-produced, fresh food at the Clevedon Village Farmers’ Market - much of which is not available in supermarkets at all - but you’re also getting a good deal. Check out these comparisons, gleaned from the local branch of a major supermarket chain last week:

TAKING CARE OF BUSINESS
The Clevedon Farmers Market has recently been presented with the Business Association award for the “Most Significant Contribution to the Clevedon Business Community for 2007”

RECIPE OF THE MONTH

Herbed lamb cutlets with olive and lemon

Ingredients

  • 12 organic lamb cutlets from Pilgrims Organics
  • Juice and zest of one lemon
  • 2 tablespoons of River Estate olive oil
  • 1 clove of garlic, crushed
  • 1 teaspoon of finely chopped fresh rosemary
  • 1 teaspoon of butter
  • A couple of dozen River Estate table olives.
  • Remove pips by flattening olives with a large knife
  • 2 tablespoons of chopped parsley

Method
Trim lamb cutlets of fat and place in a dish.
Pour over lemon juice and zest, rosemary and garlic - marinate for at least 30 minutes.
Heat remaining oil and butter in a large pan. Drain the cutlets, reserving the marinade, and sauté over a medium heat until cooked through, turning once. Remove from pan and set aside.
Drain the pan, then add the olives, parsley and remaining marinade. Bring to the boil and cook for 2 minutes. Season to taste with salt and pepper, pour over the cutlets and serve with potato mash and wilted snow pea shoots.
