NEW TO MARKET

This winter, market stalls offer a whole realm of culinary delights and an interesting range of plants and seedlings for your garden.

Nico's Italian Desserts bring us a range of traditional Italian baking - delicate amaretti and hazelnut baci di dama (ladies kisses) are the perfect accompaniment to morning espresso and should not be missed. Nico also makes a fantastic authentic tiramisu a true 'pick me up'.

Out of the Dark Mushrooms are supplying us with both button and large flat mushrooms, they also have buckets of mushroom compost and spawn that gives 6-8 weeks of growing fun.

The Vegetarian Bakehouse offer delicious vegan and vegetarian savouries which can be eaten fresh or frozen for convenient healthy meals.

We welcome the seasonal return of Estuary Orchard with sun sweetened citrus to keep winter chills at bay.

In the garden there is plenty to do preparing for spring and brightening the winter landscape.

Denise Jeffreys joins us with glorious potted colour, seedlings and perennials for the flower garden. David Brundell from Gardenza - the extraordinary subtropical garden at Glenbrook Beach is bringing his unusual range of subtropical bulbous plants to market.

Together with our native and kitchen garden expert Mandy from Mandeville Gardens and our seed saver Stella from Running Brook Seeds there is a wide range of plants and expert hands-on gardening advice at the market this winter.

Donna of Avoculture

Donna and Philip Feaver have been growing avocados on their orchard in Maungakaramea for fourteen years. Since answering the call from the farmers market in 2007 Donna has been bringing us farm fresh Reed and Hass avocado pears, along with seasonal offerings of potatoes, sweetcorn and a wide variety of subtropical fruit from their mature orchard and garden.

For a wild dessert idea ask Donna for her recipe for Alligator and Lime Pie - it is exotic and delicious - it will definitely take you by surprise!

Talk about wild - The Cherry Ripes (pictured above) are the Tuakau chapter of the Red Hatters - a glamorous gang for older girls that visited the market in May.

CHICKEN, LEEK AND MUSHROOM POT PIES

"Simple to prepare, this dish will satisfy a winter appetite with warmth and local flavour"

Helen Dorresteyn
Market Manager

  • 1 tablespoon of olive oil
  • 3 organic chicken breast cut to 2cm dice
  • 60g pancetta or 2 rashers of bacon cut into small pieces
  • 100g of small button mushrooms
  • 1 small leek sliced
  • 1 clove of garlic crushed
  • 1/2 cup of dry white wine
  • 2 cups of chicken stock
  • 1 tablespoon of thyme leaves
  • 750g of potatoes peeled and chopped
  • 40g of butter
  • 1 tablespoon of milk
  • 1 1/2 tablespoons of cornflour
  • 1/4 cup of water
  • handful grated extra mature gouda
  • pinch ground paprika

Heat the olive oil in a deep skillet over a high heat. Add chicken and cook for 5mins or until it has browned, keep turning the chicken so it doesn’t stick. Remove to a dish and add the leek, garlic, mushrooms and bacon to the pan, cook for 4 minutes.

Return the chicken to the pan add the stock ,wine and thyme. Reduce heat and simmer for 15 minutes, then season to taste.

Boil the potatoes in salted water, drain and mash with butter and milk when soft.

Mix the water and cornflour together until smooth and then add to chicken mixture, cook until sauce thickens.
Turn on your oven grill and heat. Divide the chicken between 6 individual oven proof dishes, top with mashed potato. Top with cheese and a light sprinkle of paprika - grill until golden.

The Morgan Sports Car Club paid us a visit in May, among the many beautiful automobiles was this delightful 1928 Aero with 1100 cc, 3 wheels and a colourful past.
If your car club would like to pay us a visit drop us a line - we always love seeing classics at the market.
