Market news from the farm gate and beyond...
July 2008

Welcome to the July edition of Fresh. It’s school holiday time again and we’ve got the perfect mid-winter activity for the kids.

Set them up at the table with the art box and tell them they’ve got the chance to win $50 worth of toys from the fabulous Hot Topic toy shop in Howick. To be in to win, all they have to do is send us an artwork about the market. Any topic (a favourite thing, a ‘still life’, an overview) is most welcome, and kids can use any medium they like - be it paint, pencil, pastel or collage.

The competition is open to 3-12 year olds (age considered in selection of winners), with prizes for: - Most innovative artwork, - Best observational artwork, - Artwork that best captures the atmosphere of the market

All artworks should be A3 size and handed into the coffee stall by August 10. The three winners will be announced on August 17, and we’d like to exhibit all entries around the market right through the chilly months (artworks will be returned on request from the coffee stall in October).

Naturally, we’d hate to be accused of neglecting our older customers, so we’re also calling for entries into our inaugural CVFM short poem competition. No rules - let your imagination run wild. We promise to publish the best of them (one each month) and if you do get published we’ll give you a fabulous bottle of Waiuku River Merlot. To get you started, here’s a wee ditty that we’ve knocked up:

Great grandmother Mc Fee
Was a healthy 103
Her secret ingredient
Gained through expedient
Was a full wholesome basket
From Clevedon Farmers’ Market

Yeah, well, we didn’t have long to work on it. If you think you can do better, Click here to email your entry (with contact details) or pop it in an envelope with your name, address and phone number and drop it into the coffee stall.
Come on, folks - do your bit for mid-winter mood enhancement.

IN SEASON
This month at the market, you’ll find: oranges, lemons, limes, mandarins, grapefruit, potatoes, oyster mushrooms, bok choy, salad greens, spinach, watercress, fennel, parsnips, beetroot, kumara, pumpkin, spinach, leeks, carrots, cucumbers, Jerusalem artichokes, avocados, kumara, baby beets and baby turnips, leeks, broccoli, brocolini carrots - plus a huge range of non-seasonal edibles (click here for a full list of our vendors and their produce).

MARKET BITES: Are You Game
Anyone out there searching for a gap in the gourmet food market? If so, look no further - it’s wild game we’re missing. Having cooked up the most delicious shoulder of wild pork the other day, we were left asking why there isn’t a local game butchery where wild game can be certified for sale. If you’re lucky enough to have a hunter in the family, you’ll understand what a tragedy this is. Any efforts to rectify this situation would result in instant epicurean hero status.

Visit Graham and Rhyll out the front of the market building for your delicious super food fix - plus pretty buxus topiaries for your patio.

DIRTY WORK
In the garden, July is the time to plant roses, fruit trees and ornamentals. Also cut back and divide overgrown clumps of perennials and prune roses and grape vines. Strawberries and seed potatoes can go in - see Eion Scarrow at the market for expert gardening advice and strawberry plants that crop heavily with a delicious sweet fruit.
Stella from Running Brook Seeds has some interesting varieties of seed potatoes and seed for sowing in winter. Mulching your garden beds over the winter will make all the difference in the spring.

RECIPE OF THE MONTH
Stifado

A rich and aromatic Greek beef stew that’s designed to take the chill out of those nippy winter evenings.

1kg stewing beef - shin, chuck or blade
4 Tbsp flour
Salt and pepper
4 Tbsp olive oil
12-15 small pickling onions
4 cloves garlic, sliced
1 tsp oregano, fresh or dried
1 tsp freshly ground black pepper
1 tsp ground cumin
3 Tbsp wine vinegar
1 cinnamon stick
1 bay leaf
1 whole clove
400g tomatoes in juice
1 cup beef stock

Cut the beef into bite sized pieces and toss in flour, salt and pepper. Heat 2 tablespoons of oil in a heavy pan or casserole dish and brown the meat in batches, adding more oil if needed and stirring to avoid the flour catching.
Set browned beef aside. Peel and sauté the onions in the rest of the oil until they are lightly golden, then remove them from the pan and set aside.
Stir in the garlic, pepper, cumin and oregano and cook for a few seconds till fragrant, then add the vinegar. Return the meat to the pan and toss through the vinegar, then add all remaining ingredients except for the onions. Simmer on a low heat for 45 minutes, partially covering the pan and stirring occasionally.
Add the onions to the pan and cook for another 30 minutes. Serve topped with chopped parsley or coriander, alongside a salad of fresh greens, cucumber and thick Greek yoghurt with crusty bread, plain rice or mashed potato.
