Market news from the farm gate and beyond...
Apr 2008

Welcome to the April edition of Fresh. We’d like to kick off by thanking all those clever gardeners who took part in last week’s Pumpkin Competition at the Clevedon Village Farmers’ Market.

It’s your enthusiasm that makes this event an annual highlight on Clevedon’s calendar - and helps us to promote the merits of fresh food and self-sufficiency at the same time.
A special thanks to all the kids who got their hands dirty and had a go, and to our wonderful judges (who give their time, expertise and smiles for free) - the Revs Sandy and Colin Neal. Results were:

CATEGORY ONE (young people up to 16 years old) - Heaviest Pumpkin. Won by Christopher Jarrett from Papamoa with a 57kg entry. Christopher took home an iPod Nano 4GB for his sterling efforts.
CATEGORY TWO (adults) - Heaviest Pumpkin. Won by Jonathon Ritchie from Clevedon with an enormous 68kg pumpkin. Jonathon took home over $300 worth of market produce.
Other winners were Leah Mosen (Papakura) for Smallest Pumpkin, Portia Prangley (Whitford) for Tallest Pumpkin, Sophie Watts (Clevedon) for Most Beautifully Ugly Pumpkin, Shelly Maggs (Manurewa) for Best-Looking Pumpkin, Daisy Nicolas (Howick) for Most Unusual Pumpkin. These winners received $20 Farmers Market Vouchers each, to be redeemed for market produce. Congratulations to you all.

CHEESE, PLEASE
As our regulars will know, Clevedon Valley Buffalo Company is set to launch New Zealand’s first locally made buffalo cheeses at the Market. We’ve been sampling our products at the market over the past couple of weeks, and we’d like to say a huge thank-you to market-goers for their interest and their positivity - but mostly for their patience.
We understand it’s been frustrating for some customers who just want to get the stuff home and serve it up! The delay is paperwork, but we’ve finally got the necessary approvals and we are very near to lift-off.
We’re especially excited about our imminent launch after a truly joyous night at last month’s Champions of Cheese Awards. At this, our first awards event (and mere weeks into trial production), the Clevedon Valley Buffalo Company was thrilled to take home two Champion awards, two gold medals and two silvers (details below). Hurrah!
• Fresh Unripened Cheese category - Buffalo Ricotta - Champion award & Gold medal.
• New Cheese category - Buffalo Ricotta - Champion award & Gold medal.
• New Cheese category - Buffalo Mozzarella - Silver medal.
• European Style Cheese category - Buffalo Mozzarella - Silver medal.

MARKET PROFILE
Sylvia Sandford
Limes on the Firth

Sylvia Sandford

Sylvia, purveyor of fine seasonal limes and related products, has become the Clevedon Village Farmer’s Market’s cooking guru. From her post behind the trusty market barbecue, Sylvia turns fresh market produce into delicious dishes every Sunday in front of interested shoppers. She’s also full of handy tips, and is always happy to talk about good food with those who love it as much as she does.
Visit her out the front of the market building from 10am - 11am.

NEW STALLHOLDERS
We’d like to extend a warm market welcome to two new stallholders.

Te Kauwhata Organics introduce their delicious vine-ripened table grapes - sweet, juicy and free from chemical nasties.

Roses Galore are at the market with a beautiful selection of blooms from their hothouses in Drury.

MARKET BITES
It takes seven litres of water and 162g of oil to create a one litre plastic bottle.
One supermarket we visited recently had over 40 different water products in disposable plastic bottles.
Plastic is estimated to take up to 500 years to break down in the environment.
